Hi, I'm Mary. I started The Decluttered Soul for one reason: to help women find a space to eliminate distractions and make room for Jesus.
When we talk about decluttering our souls, we're talking about all of ourselves: our minds, emotions, thoughts, and our surroundings.
The truth is that clutter in our surroundings is a manifestation of what’s happening inside us.
At the height of my distractedness and discontent, I was soul-soothing by collecting pretty things or saving nostalgic items. All my trips to the thrift store or my attempts at cozifying my home were just distractions from the pain I was feeling inside.
Every distraction is a moment when we don't have to look inside and see what needs cleaning.
We're doing the dance that's as old as time - the old cover-up. Adam and Eve started it, but we've perfected it in our society. There is a never-ending buffet of options we can use to distract ourselves from what really matters.
When I returned to my soul work and re-engaged with God's calling on my life, I asked Him what I should write about and who I should serve. His response was immediate and clear:
The harvest is ripe, but the workers are distracted.
We can get distracted by the "good" things, too. Our busyness at church or serving in the community can be a distraction. We all know those women - some of us have been those women, am I right? We are so busy DO-ing things for God that we never have time to BE with Him.
Jesus will never fight for your attention. He is constant, however, and he doesn't move away from us. We move, we shift, we wiggle.
The Bible tells us that when we draw near to him, he draws near to us. That means we are making space for him in our lives and to hear his voice.
I’ve tried all the things, and I am here to tell you that there is only ONE way to get close(r) to Jesus: by getting still in mind and body.
That's when we can hear his voice, sense his presence, and experience his transforming power in our lives.
That's when that still, small voice comes through clearly.
Remember Elijah? When God came to him, God was not in the noise but in the still, small voice. Elijah needed space, solitude, quiet, and rest to hear God's voice.
After his work for God, God sent Elijah to the wilderness for rest and alone time; God ministered to Elijah with food and a nap.
